Compassionate release of super is a government-regulated pathway that allows eligible Australians to access part of their superannuation early to fund essential expenses, including approved medical and dental treatments.
Applications for compassionate release must be lodged with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), which assesses each application against legislated criteria. If approved, the ATO issues a determination allowing your super fund to release the funds.
Who qualifies?
Eligibility is assessed by the ATO on a case-by-case basis. Generally, the treatment needs to address a serious condition, and procedures that are purely cosmetic are not eligible.
